Problems with Java and Web Browsers

Current Java security restrictions - prevent Flicker running in your Web
browser from:
- Reading local files
- Reading URLs from web sites other than NCI Flicker Server
Solutions:
- Use indirect image fetching by NCI Flicker proxy server to get image
  from the web for Flicker
- Run Java program as stand-alone "Java application" - more difficult
Robustness: early versions of Java & Web browsers had problems, but getting better
Speed: Java interpreter is slow but getting faster
Resources: Image processing uses a lot of memory and compute power,
however machines are getting larger and faster
