Setting up Flicker locally on your computer without a Web server

Currently Flicker is only available as a Java applet, but it may be run on your local computer thorough a local Web browser with using a Web server.

  1. Setup a directory with the GIF images you want to flicker (call them a.gif and b.gif).

  2. Download the FlkMirror files and save the FlkJ2.jar and *.class files in this directory. Alternatively, you can do a SAVE AS of the following files in this directory instead:
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/FlkJ2.jar
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/BrightnessContrastFilter.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/FlkAffine.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/FlkFrame.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/FlkJ2.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/ImageData.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/ImageNotFoundException.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/ImageScroller.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/ImageXform.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/Landmark.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/ScrollableImageCanvas.class
        http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/SpatialXform.class

  3. Create a Web page (eg f2demo.html) in that directory that will be similar to: http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/flicker/f2plasma.html

    (For example, you could do a SAVE AS of this file into your directory as f2demo.html.)

  4. Edit f2demo.html replacing plasmaH.gif with your a.gif and plasmaL with your b.gif. The key part of the f2plasma.html HTML is as follows:
      <APPLET NAME=Flicker CODE=FlkJ2.class  ARCHIVE=FlkJ2.jar
              WIDTH=650 HEIGHT=700 ALIGN=absmiddle
        ALT="You need a java-enabled browser to see the Flicker applet here."
      >
      <PARAM NAME=image1 VALUE=plasmaH.gif>
      <PARAM NAME=image2 VALUE=plasmaL.gif>
      <PARAM NAME=defaultFlickerDelay VALUE="300">
      </APPLET>

  5. Then just run your Web browser on the local file (in Windows, just click on it!).

  6. You might review the Flicker API description to see what additional PARAMs would be useful.
      If you have software that can generate the <APPLET>...</APPLET> you could automate comparing lots of different images.
