11. Future Improvements in the technique

• New Flicker tools - could be extended to include:
  1. spot measurement and quantitation (manual and automatic)
  2. automatic alignment of spots between gels
  3. integration of putative identification with existing Internet databases (eg. SWISS-PROT)

• May be useful for other domains - as technique of comparing data from different data sources (local and world-wide):
  1. gel electrophoresis (both 1-D and 2-D for protein, RNA and DNA materials),
  2. chromatographs,
  3. serial section images produced by various microtome methods,
  4. medical X-rays for comparing bone growth or tumor progression,
  5. MRI or PET images,
  6. astronomical star maps,
  7. spectra (of anything),
  8. graphs (of anything),
  9. problem domains which produce mis-aligned or distorted images,
  10. problem domains which lose alignment during data acquisition.

• Federated databases could offer additional types of information useful for distributed analysis.
