2. Comparing 2D PAGE gels for putative spot identification

• Scientists around the world often work on similar data

• Comparing 2D gels may be useful for suggesting putative protein spot identification (eg. Melanie, Quest, GELLAB, PDI, BioImage, etc.)

• Could build database of two gels using 2D gel computer database systems
  1. Difficult if gel image data is not available locally
  2. Time consuming if only want to compare one spot
  3. But, good for long term multiple-gel multiple-spot databases

• Could visually compare gels - by sliding one gel (film or dried stained gel) over another other on light box
  1. Difficult to match spots at times, even with overlaying the gels
  2. Difficult if gels have quite different morphologies
  3. Need to have both gels or copies to do this
