8. Image enhancement sometimes makes comparison easier

• Image enhancement may correct distortions making comparison easier

• Spatial Warping - affine or polynomial transforms are useful for correcting distorted gels
  1. Eg. comparing linear and non-linear gels, or different ampholine ranges.
  2. Warping
     • maps one gel image to the geometry of the other gel image
     • requires corresponding landmark spots in each gel to solve transforms
     • then uses inverse transform to warp one gel to morphology of other gel

• Edge sharpening - improves spot definition for fuzzy spots

• Contrast enhancement - makes it easier to compare gels or regions with different overall darkness
